Jen Stark

After beginning to investigate into colour, and how effective and challenging it can be to combine colours and avoid black and white, I think Jen Stark's work is an amazing example of how to use stripes and colour combinations to get exciting creations.

The start of visual language

My interpretations using only cutting devices and coloured paper of...

A 'Beautiful Scream'

A 'Talking Worm'

A 'Colourful Bear'

Everyone's work was successful, and here are some of the ones that I thought worked particularly well:

Fluffy Bear

Romantic Dance

Tumble Worm

I'm completely inspired by the amount of effort and crafting gone into all his work. Will definitely be practising cutting out more often instead of using the obvious ways of making images.

Illustrator Workshop

To practise with Illustrator, I traced over my 'Alphabet soup' typeface to get the outlines shown below.

Because my original design was hand-crafted, I wanted to get the same detailed effect, which meant A LOT of hours getting the lines in the top half spot on.

I chose blue and yellow to represent the strongest characteristics of my partner based on the words in the original 'Alphabet soup'. The yellow, curvy half brings out the witty, friendly side and the blue staggered lines show the more nervous, insecure side.

Not all the letterforms are perfect, but seeing it printed as a two colour typeface family, I am really happy with how it turned out.

Print Workshop

Monoprint stencils and designs.

I then produced a screen print design based on one of the mono prints above. I really enjoyed the effort and detail that goes into this process and think the resolutions were successful considering some - like me- hadn't worked in this way before.

This was the final outcome after combining two colours to my initial design. I really want to do some more!

Ford Advert from Creative Review Magazine.
Just wanted to put this up as an example of how much I like the 'unfinished' look on a design, where it combines hand drawn with digital.

Typefaces from advertisements in Creative Review that I find eye-catching. They appear very different to one another, but the same theme runs throughout them; the idea of flowing, linking, soft marks and detail.
